Exam/Essay Prep Info!

Here is the link to the work we did in class today! Remember we will continue to review tomorrow!

English 12 B: Tuesday

Today we took a quiz on the first 24 pages of Speak. We ran into some trouble with people not reading, so remember that one bombed quiz might not be the end of the world but eventually they will add up and your grade will suffer.

While you read, you need to be answering the questions on the study guide.

Your homework is to finish the first marking period, and answer questions 1-3. Expect another quiz tomorrow!

NOTICE!!

This is the new place for all English 12 A and English 12 B posts. All posts from the beginning of the school year were included as-is which means they have both English 12 and College English posts mixed together. Starting today, what we do in class for both 12 A and 12 B can be found here in one super awesome social justice spot! Carry on!

College English

  1. We discussed the first 20 pages of The Road, read to page 30 and tonight you will read to page 58, ending at the phrase “yes, she is.”
  2. We introduced our journals and completed the first section for pages 1-20. The journals have several components and each time you read for homework you need to complete each section. The sections are:
    • Reflections
    • Vocabulary
    • Symbols, Motifs and Imagery
    • Thought-Sparking Questions
    • Questions of Your Own
  3. For each reading you MUST complete a reflection, a vocab section, and add three questions of your own that you have about the text. As things come up you will add to your symbols, motifs and imagery section and as we go along I will give you specific questions to answer for the thought-sparking (TSQ) questions section.

Tonight for homework:

  1. Read to page 58 and stop at “yes, she is.”
  2. Complete another reflection, a vocab section, and add three questions of your own that you have about the text.
  3. Answer TSQ #3

the-road-book

We began reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy today. In preparation we discussed our perspective on many different situations that come up in this book, from whether or not we think it is important to use complete sentences to whether we could see ourselves eating people. That assignment is here.

We also discussed the criteria for a post-apocalyptic story-line and listed movies/books/television shows  that matched up (The Book of Eli, I am Legend, World-War Z, etc…).

For homework you need to read to page 20.

College English

We spent the day in the lab working on our essays (draft one is due tomorrow) and reading “In the Field”.

English 12 A

Today we talked about institutional racism and read a fantastic and informative article on the topic. It does a great job of breaking down the ways in which an institution can display racism.

English 12 B

yummy

We finished talking about Yummy and re-wrote a scene in the book from Yummy’s perspective. It needs to be one page, front and back, skipping lines. We also continued talking about annotated bibliographies.

Thursday and Friday: 12/11-12/12

College English

We went to the library to get a recreational book on Thursday. On Friday you had a substitute and you read:

    • “The Man I Killed”
    • “Ambush”
    • “Speaking of Courage”
    • “Notes”

Then you needed to answer these questions.

English 12 A

We went to the library to get a recreational book on Thursday and then we talked about the three kinds of racism. We watched Joy DeGruy’s telling of her experience with white privilege.

On Friday you read and annotated “White Privilege on the Streets of Ferguson”

English 12 B

On Thursday we learned about http://mel.org/ and how to use databases to research our topics. On Friday you had a chance to create an annotated bibliography from that information. Don’t forget that using http://www.easybib.com/ is a great way to create citations.
