Sam Killermann itspronouncedmetrosexual.com

Yesterday we read an article by Sam Killermann: read it here. It discusses gender fluidity and breaks down some of the different components of identity.

Today we watched several videos (see below) and read excerpts from the book It Gets Better. Make four annotations per page as you read and when you are finished write a letter to future high school students. You may talk about whatever topic you choose- think of something you have struggled with or something you have seen others struggle with. Talk about the issue and how you or someone  you know overcame it… or maybe how you WISH you/they overcame it. One page, front and back, skipping lines.

We watched these videos:

We also discussed this slide presentation.

Wednesday and Thursday

Things you need!

Monday: Next Unit

Today you worked on finishing your creativity boosters packet from last week and then we presented poems for extra credit. After that, we began talking about LGBT rights and issues– this is our last unit for 12A. We read a timeline of events in America to kick off the unit.

Feminist Movements Compared

Today we compared Maya Angelou’s poem “Phenomenal Woman” to Beyonce’s “Flawless,” and answered these questions. We talked about how they have similar messages as well as how they approached the same topic a little differently. For homework you are to choose one topic within the overarching topic of feminism. Its could be something like gender roles, women in the workplace, women historically, how feminism helps men, or how women are represented in the media, etc… You have many options. Once you have your topic write fifteen lines of poetry. This can be one long poem, or a couple of shorter poems. As long as it equals fifteen lines and discusses feminism in some way– you’re good.

Wednesday: Intersectional Feminism Continues

Today we continued our discussion about intersectional feminism. We talked about Beyonce’s new video, “Formation” and the many ways in which it is intersectional. We also answered these questions that went with our reading for last night AND our reading for today.

Tuesday: Intersectional Feminism

Today we talked about why intersectional feminism is so important. First, we played a board game that demonstrated the difficult road women have had to take to get to where they are today– which isn’t even equal yet! While the game showed us a lot of things we might not have known about the fight for women’s rights, it failed to mention how different it has been, and still is, for women of color (and OTHER intersectionalities too!)

We watched a video, looked at a comic together, and read a couple of articles in order to further learn about this issue.

Today we are reading Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” if you are absent, be sure to read it and complete the accompanying activities: active reading chart, reading questions.

Monday: Women in Advertisements

Today we watched this Ted Talk on women in advertising and answered questions:

Things you might need from last week to today!

We watched this Ted Talk:

We read an article about a group of girls who tried to set up a feminist society in their school.

We looked at a slide show about why people need feminism and wrote a five paragraph essay about the topic. (The instructions are at the end of the slideshow).

We read an article about music lyrics and sexism.

TODAY we took a break from our current subject and discussed the water crisis in Flint. We looked at a version of this timeline and watched this video that talks about the issues through the lens of racial and class tensions.
