Tuesday: Reading logs and senior projects

Today we wrote letters to the donors of the Kalamazoo Promise. You need this checked off of your (green) senior checklist sheet before graduation. We also read from Starting with I (the fifth section) and did reading logs. After that we worked on senior projects.

Monday: All Together Now! **Revisited**

YOUR LAST DAY IN THE LAB IS THIS FRIDAY 5/22/2015. I won’t be here on that day so you should aim to have everything completed by this THURSDAY. That way you can simply tweak things on Friday to make them look good, or get them uploaded etc…

THESE ARE DUE ON TUESDAY, MAY 26 WITHOUT EXCEPTION!

Here is a list of all the hand-outs you need for your website:

Here is my example website if you need a point of reference. Please note- it is unfinished and just meant to show you the basic structural elements.  www.caseyslager.weebly.com

Wednesday: Half Day

Third hour worked on Senior Projects. The fourth genre was introduced today. If you are in fourth hour and are interested in getting a head start, or if you were absent in third hour- you can access that here.

Tuesday: Personal Artifact

Today we finished the last two commercials on your sheet and did the following:

  1. Read an essay of your choice from Starting With I (from the first section)
  2. Fill out the reading log
  3. Brainstorm for your personal artifact with this sheet
  4. Create a booklet and transfer your six pages to the booklet. Instructions below.

Monday: Commercials!

Hello! Monday we looked at commercials and analyzed them using whatever theory we thought worked best. Your notes sheet is here and the commercials are listed below.

Wednesday: Genre Three and Notes Pages

Hello! Today we worked on genre three and our notes pages. You have to FINISH the genre before you can write the notes page- so currently you have two that you can write.

Friday: Schick and Sexism

Today we watched a new commercial by Schick and Skintimate that partners with the movie Pitch Perfect 2. We discussed the many elements of body shaming and stereotyping that are fairly blatant throughout the advertisement. After we discussed the ad, we wrote letters to the company.

IF YOU WERE ABSENT FRIDAY: We did the second genre and wrote a five-paragraph essay based on our topic. Here is the link to the requirements: Essay Genre. I have copies of the essay outline sheet in class.

Wednesday: Senior Projects

Hello! It has been a couple of days since I updated last! My apologies for the lull.

Monday: I was absent, you wrote one page without skipping lines, about everything you have learned about your topic so far regarding the research you have currently done.

Tuesday: We practiced essay writing and you wrote a five-paragraph essay using the following thesis: High school is survivable only if (reason 1), (reason 2) and (reason 3). Remember that a thesis must have three parts.

  1. Identification
    1. What is the topic you are talking about?
  2. Claim
    1. What do you believe about the topic?
  3. Direction
    1. What are the 3 main reasons you can support your claim?
    2. This will basically outline the body paragraphs of your essay.

Wednesday: We worked on peer-editing our genres, and started learning about annotated bibliographies. Your genre is due tomorrow to go on your website.

Resources you may need:

  • Citation-maker for annotated bibliography: http://www.easybib.com/
  • In-text citation guidelines: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/03/

If I think of more I will update it!

Friday: Genre One and Day of Silence

Hello everyone! Today we talked about what it means to be an ally, both to people who are LGBTQ or anyone who might need someone on their side. We watched a great video that shows just how important it is to have someone to speak up for you and to add POSITIVE words to the conversation.

Then we introduced the first genre. By Monday please choose the option you wish to do and have the following things answered:

  • What am I going to do?
  • How will I focus this? (Who am I writing to?)
  • What questions do I need to answer in order to have the right information?
  • What research do I need to do?
  • What will this look like when it is finished?

In general, I would like you to brainstorm for your first genre. Be ready to move forward on Monday.

Thursday: Websites

Today we created our websites! Use this guide if you lose yours or if you weren’t here.

When you have successfully created your website, please put your name and URL in the class document for your hour.
